GUIDELINES FOR ADMISSION

GENERAL

  • International Students are not admitted into all programmes and therefore certain programmes are omitted from the list below.
  • Applicants should meet the statutory requirements as prescribed by the Matriculation Board (Universities South Africa):
  • The following grades are acceptable by the Matriculation Board for exemption for applicants completing Cambridge or non-Cambridge administered examinations:

A-level: Grades A, B, C, D and E AS-level: Grades A, B, C and D O-level: Grades A, B, and C

Please note: Although the Matriculation Board accepts only the above symbols for Exemptions purposes. The University sets its own subject grade requirements for admission purposes which may be higher or lower than those required by the Matriculation Board. These are used to calculate the AS and to make a final admissions decision. See detailed requirements as per Examination Board link: https://mb.usaf.ac.za/

ADMISSION AND REGISTRATION PROCEDURES FOR RESEARCH MASTER'S AND DOCTORAL DEGREES

  • Important to note not all subjects are recognized for exemption purposes and this information is regularly updated on the USAF website.
  • Universities can set additional requirements that needs to be met using the Applicant Score (AS) as indicated below.
  • The AS system allocates point values to school leaving symbols which should include languages, one being English, Mathematics and the subject requirement for the programme selected up to 6 subjects.

The AS system is therefore used to ensure that the Application must:

  1. Meet the minimum AS requirements.
  2. Meet the minimum subject grade requirements.
  3. Meet the minimum compulsory school leaving subject requirements.

The annual enrolment planning process sets a cap on the number of enrolments for certain programmes which may limit the number of spaces available in those programmes. International students are only accepted for full-time studies.

 Notes:

  1. Applicants need to fulfill the foreign exemption requirements in order to be directly admitted into degree programs, e.g. Candidates need to present a combination of Advanced Levels or Advanced Subsidiary Levels together with Ordinary Level Certificates.
  2. The foreign school qualification is benchmarked against the South African school-leaving certificate as the standard. The University may add additional requirements for specific programmes.
