Community Service Learning

An opportunity to develop global competence through volunteer work.


Students will develop and understanding of the current issues impacting life in South Africa.

Participants will be able to volunteer their time and skills and in the process, gain an understanding of the development challenges facing South Africa.

Facilitated by NMU academics and community experts, lectures will consist of theoretical and interactive sessions.

Community Holiday Club

An understanding of current issues impacting South Africa.


A running of a holiday club held in a disadvantaged area during the school vacation periods. Providing students with the opportunity to experience the social, cultural and political dynamics of South Africa.

The Holiday Club aims to empower youth in leadership development and acquiring knowledge of the South African heritage and culture and environmental issues.

South African History, Culture & Language

Exploring South African history, since the Eastern Cape frontier’s earliest inhabitation by the Khoi and the San to the present.


The programme will consist of exposing the student to South Africa’s rich cultural and linguistic history. The dynamics of the Eastern Cape’s frontier as meeting place of different cultures and languages as a microcosm of South Africa will be discussed.

Human Rights

We will examine Human Rights form a social science and constitutional/legal perspective.


Through the analysis of economic, social, cultural and political contexts in which they arise. 
 
The universal and cultural specific dimensions of human rights will be explored in relation to social and cultural diversity and their local and global contexts, with an emphasis on Africa. 

Students will learn to apply various human rights perspectives to selected human rights issues

Conflict Management and Transformation

Focusing on the negotiation processes and complexities of negotiation as a tool for conflict management and transformation.


Through readings, documentaries, classroom discussions and guest lectures, the process to understand the strategies and approaches and approaches that led to the "miracle" and the "birth" of a new democratic South Africa will be unpacked
South Africa's current socio economic and political dynamics will be debate in relation to the negotiation objectives.

Environmental

The Eastern Cape in South Africa hosts a globally unique concentration of biodiversity hotspots

 
Students will gain first hand experience of the unique environmental issues in South Africa. 
Other special l features of the Eastern Cape include a treasure trove of ancient fossils, and the oldest anatomically modern humans as well as some of the earliest cultural artefacts. 
The Eastern Cape provides the ideal location to learn how our development opportunities are shaped by our environment.

Riding the Knowledge Wave

Marine Ecology and Surfing in Nelson Mandela Bay


Students will gain first hand knowledge of the unique coastal environment of the Eastern Cape Province in South Africa. Students will be introduced to the rich marine heritage of the area and explore basic concepts and principles of marine ecology. the key focus will be on oceanography, estuaries, rocky shores, sandy beaches and reefs. 
The programme will be presented with lectures in the morning, and practical visits in the afternoons. Also incorporated will be surfing lessons in between class time and practical visits with certified instructors.

African Traditional Healing Systems

Students will gain insight into South Africa's "Green Medicine" revolution

 
From an ethnographic and pharmaceutical perspective students will gain this insight by examining the mystical African psyche through ancestral practices and the application of "natural" remedies to meet present day needs. 

This programme will engage the post-colonial medicine and healing environment in South Africa. Within the South African context, different cultures and beliefs in healing and medicinal practices will be explored.

Ancient Wisdom & Holistic Health

View health and healing contexualised within African cultural systems and practices

 
The era of the "New Age" has introduces a holistic understanding of the whole person in relation to their illness and well being. 
This programme will contexualise the notion of holism and holistic health from the perspective of some of the cultures present within Africa and South Africa focusing on historical and contemporary practices. 
Incorporated in the programme are also visits that will immerse students into the cultural and wildlife heritage.
